Hyde Park Golf Course is a link to America's golfing past that needs to be preserved. Over time, modest housing (by modern standards) was built surrounding the course but not ON the course so it retains that walk-in-the-park feel when you play there. The clubhouse is an impressive brick and tile structure that with a little TLC could really ...

When a course layout engenders praise and complaint in about equal measure, count on it to provide an interesting four hours. During our round at Sapelo Hammock, in the central coastal region of Georgia, one of our playing partners labeled one par 3 as “the worst designed in America,” a few holes before claiming another hole as “The worst designed par 5 in America.” Yet Golfweek magazine has called the course’s par 3s and par 5s “spectacular.” Offered another of our ...

In 1927, a date-palm caretaker for the Greenland Ranch, now called the Oasis at Death Valley, laid out just three-holes of golf at what would become the lowest golf course in the world. At 214 feet below sea level, it is a must-play for avid golfers. You are probably wondering where the highest golf course is located. That distinction belongs to the La Paz Golf Club in Bolivia, at an elevation of 10,800 ft.

The cart paths to golf courses we all know well, even if we have never set foot on the first tee there, are well worn. They are Pebble Beach, the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, some of the Pinehurst Resort courses and other heralded and well-trafficked layouts (where green fees can be as much as 10 times the price of a lesser known but highly playable muni). Think of Off The Beaten Cart Path courses as those that will surprise and delight you, no matter where they are. You just may have never heard of them.
Please help us add to the list of terrific yet largely unheralded golf courses.
